The following day, Brock had a lot to ponder and most people kept their distance. Either they could tell he was deep in thought, or because they had been told a lie about him that made them believe he was dangerous. Whatever their reason, he felt isolated even though he was around others. He had always chosen to keep to himself, but he didnât like not having a choice about it.
Near the town center was a cordoned off section between buildings where dry goods were stored. It was a collection and distribution point for food and anyone could come and get daily rations. The Extractors hadn't gone on a run in four days, and there were limited stores available. The Doctor was hedging all bets on this next raid, forsaking basic food runs. Brock stood in line and when it was his turn, a woman wearing a chef's hat gave him a plastic cup half full of uncooked rice and a can of generic green beans. She was silent and wouldn't meet his eyes.
He walked off, hot summer sun cooking his neck, already looking forward to the quiet coolness waiting for him at the museum. He knew he would soon be forced to vacate. Along the way, a skinny teenage boy matched his step. He had a mess of blond hair sticking up in odd directions, striking blue eyes, and a hooked nose. He didn't speak, but Brock could tell he wanted to say something. He could feel the boy's eyes burning into the side of his head.
"You're Brock Skeller!" the boy finally exclaimed.
"I was. Who the hell are you?" he growled back.
"Austin. Austin Briggs. My uncle was in the Militarized Front. He wasn't TK, but he loved to hear about you guys. He often talked about you! I heard one time you killed ten Zees with a ball-peen hammer. Why not use a piece of metal or something that flies straighter?"
"Because TK isn't all flying objects. It's about being smart and strategic."
The boy waited for him to explain. Brock rolled his eyes.
"Actually, it was twenty. I ripped a piece of trim off the wall and wedged it tight behind a desk. I funneled them through the doorway so they tripped. The hammer did the rest. TK is a tool, not a solution."
Brock looked at the kid and he beamed back.
"I'll have to remember that. I'm trying out for them today. I've already talked with Carter and he says I have potential. He's really strong. Could be as strong as you. But he doesn't think like you do."
Brock stopped midstride and faced the boy. "Why would you want to join them? Didn't they tell you about these abilities? Their cost? Don't you know about the bleeds?"
"I know itâs hard on the body."
"It ages you. I am near forty, but I feel twice that. My joints ache. My memories are fading. I don't sleep but a few hours a night. All of this came about when I began using. How old are you? Sixteen? Have you a Purpose yet?"
"Yes.
